“A Day Without a Calendar” is the artist’s first solo presentation since his death, showcasing a selection of fourteen works from his last photographic project. The exhibition explores Tadeusz Rolke’s relationships with people important to him – artists, producers, and friends. It is a document of shared journeys and improvisations: five locations visited in less than a year, a series of situational games with space.
Rolke didn’t need a studio or extensive technical facilities—mindfulness, light, and the presence of another person were enough. The series remained unfinished; the artist planned to continue it with further photographic expeditions.
Referencing Tadeusz Rolke’s favorite method—combining photographs from different periods and contexts—the exhibition will also feature photographs from 1956–2024, selected from his extensive archive. The exhibition initiates a dialogue that opens up space for new stories. It follows the paths of composition, architectural associations, and reflections on the original titles of the main series.
Tadeusz Rolke (1929-2025), one of the most renowned Polish photographers, was born in Warsaw, a place he retained a lifelong connection with. He studied art history at the Catholic University of Lublin and gained his first professional experience as a photojournalist for the weekly “Stolica” and then the monthly “Polska.” As a witness to history, he photographed Warsaw from the post-war reconstruction to the present day. He captured the people, streets, and rhythm of the city with a sensitivity unique to him. He also lived in Germany from 1970 to 1980, photographing for magazines such as “Stern,” “Spiegel,” and “Die Zeit.” In his work, he easily transcended genres, creating reportage, fashion, and creative photography with equal success.
