Neighborhood with a Climate

The Neighborhood with a Climate exhibition is part of the Co-Adapt project “Activities of local communities for adaption to climate change”.

The main goal of the Co-Adapt project is to motivate local communities to take action to adapt to climate change in their surroundings. At the exhibition, we invite you to a journey showing well-adapted cities and housing estates. We present solutions from various cities that bring many benefits, have proven success and can be an inspiration for others.

One of the many solutions presented are actions to improve stormwater management. These solutions improve the environmental conditions of trees that suffer from water shortages in cities. Rain gardens prevent flooding of streets and housing estates and increase the number of habitats for butterflies and birds.

Many examples also show that the aesthetics of designed housing greenery is changing – the greenery is multifunctional, it is not only intended to please the eye, but also to work, i.e. provide benefits, be cheaper to maintain, support biodiversity and be resistant. The rules for maintaining greenery are changing, and wild plant species, previously treated with neglect, are emerging. Other nature-based solutions bring a similar synergy effect.

Filip Springer wrote that the ecological and climate crisis is a crisis of imagination. Today we need to know examples of settlements that are well adapted to climate change and where pioneering solutions have been introduced.

We invite you to get to know the estates selected as model estates, well-adapted not only foreign but also Polish examples. Let them serve as good practices. We will not prevent many unfavorable phenomena in the 21st century, but we can better prepare for them and redesign our housing estates.

The result of the project is a serious simulation game “Osiedle z klimatem” in board and digital versions. A game aimed at making better decisions, in this case decisions regarding the development of our housing estates. We hope that such a designed tool will contribute to increasing environmental awareness and, consequently, improve the quality of life of residents not only in the housing estate but also in the entire city.
